A lonely tree
One more location to cross off the list. Although I may one day return for a freight train, and some sunshine. Continue reading A lonely tree

It took me 3 times to get this photo right. 3 days in a row, and on the first day of 2016, after sleeping off new year’s eve and before heading to more booze at family visits, everything fell into place. Probably not because of my night before, but rather thanks to trains being perfectly on schedule: around the same time as the benelux train … Continue reading Crawling up the hill
White versus green. A color difference. That was all the motivation I needed to get outside on a cold, but sunny, saturday afernoon. I was hoping to catch a Benelux service hauled by one of the white Railpool locomotives instead of a green Alpha Trains one. Variation is good. Green was the color for the train to Amsterdam… … but the train to Brussels was … Continue reading Some variation
Trains also rest sometimes. Not too long, of course, who wants an expensive pile of metal just standing there… So consider us lucky to catch this Europorte locomotive resting right where we just witnessed the delivery of some freight cars, and even more lucky that it did so close to the sign of the owner of the site, Euroports. Continue reading Europorte @ Euroports
Final destination. The cars are delivered at the client’s, to be loaded or unloaded. There were only a few gaps in the concrete fencing, we had to grab the opportunity to shoot the train when it presented itself. Continue reading A gap in the fence
At night it’s quiet in the port of Antwerp. Almost no trucks, no cars… but if you look well, you can find some trains. During one of the longest nights of the year, we found one at the small Lillo marshalling yard. The B-Logistics’ crew was working hard to deliver the goods on time at a client’s site. We had to hurry to get our … Continue reading Working hard
The train does look really small under the giant dome. The plaforms are deserted at this time. Evenings like this are precious, in their own way. I appreciate the peace and quiet, only concentrating on making the photos. Continue reading Short train under a huge dome (3)
Antwerp’s Central Station was completely renovated at the beginning of the century. The historic dome and building were kept, underneath 3 new levels open to passengers were created: 1 with shops, 2 with platforms. Daylight can even reach the bottom level. On the top level, under the historic dome, the train from Mol has just arrived at its final stop. The driver will switch sides and prepare for the return … Continue reading Short train under a huge dome (2)
Antwerp’s Central Station still appears on lists as one of the world’s most beautiful stations. I’ve been using this station on a daily basis, but it has been a long time since I’ve made some photo’s there. The electrification of the line between Antwerp and Mol was a good reason: some diesel hauled services would be replaced by electric trains. So my plan was to shoot some diesel trains under the magnificent metal-and-glass dome. … Continue reading Short train under a huge dome (1)
Nighttime is usually not the moment to shoot moving objects. Darkness makes the use of long exposure a necessity. Unless you use flashes. Today I found an interesting article about the technique of flash shooting moving trains. It gives a lot of useful information: kimandrenaud.com. I have also been experimenting with this technique, inspired by Gary Knapp‘s photos. In january 2015, the port of Antwerp was the … Continue reading Night shooting
